How Should I Take Care Of My Teeth?


Sparkly pearly whites are a valuable asset. Here are some tips on how to take care of them:

* Brushing your teeth regularly

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth twice a day. Brushing your teeth helps to remove food and plaque which promotes the growth of bacteria. These bacteria produce acid which breaks down the tooth enamel causing dental caries. Hence, a regular brushing routine should be implemented for healthy teeth.

* Flossing your teeth regularly

Teeth should be flossed regularly in addition to regular brushing as dental brushes are not effective in cleaning the spaces between the teeth. Flossing helps to remove bacteria, plaque and food in the gum line.

* Going for regular dental checkups

Regular appointements with your dentist will allow dentist to detect any damage to the teeth and intercept any problems that have developed. Should a problem present itself, the dentist can either initiate treatment or refer you to a dental specialist for further treatment and management.

* Be mindful of sugary foods

Sugary foods create a favorable environment for bacteria growth. Sugary foods should be consumed with meals as more saliva is produced, which helps to counteract the effects of acid production and help to rinse away food particles

* Drinking with a straw

Drinking with a straw will help prevent the drink from staining teeth since the straw channels the drink to the back of the mouth, eliminating the need for the teeth to come into contact with the drink.
